Colour as Couture: Painting Your Home’s Interior with Intention
An Interview with Khan from Painters Link Group
In the world of interiors, paint isn’t just a backdrop, it’s the fabric of a room. It’s the element that can dictate mood, influence perception of space, and ultimately, tell your story. Just as fashion is a form of self-expression, the colours we choose for our homes are a deeply personal style statement.
To help us navigate the art of the interior refresh, we sat down with Khan, a Project Manager with Painters Link Group, who approaches interior painting with the eye of a designer and the precision of a craftsman.
Sara, Fashion Admin: Khan, welcome. In fashion, we talk about a “capsule wardrobe” as a foundation. Does that concept translate to interior paint?
Khan: Absolutely, and that’s a fantastic analogy. Think of your wall colour as the foundational piece, the perfect pair of jeans or the classic white shirt, that you then build your entire room’s ‘outfit’ around. A timeless, neutral shade on the walls provides incredible versatility. It allows your furniture, art, textiles, and decor to take centre stage and be easily switched out as trends or your personal taste evolve. It creates a cohesive canvas so your favourite pieces can truly shine.
Sara: Speaking of trends, how should homeowners approach them? Is it a risk to use a “colour of the year” on all four walls?
Khan: (Laughs) I always advise a “trend-forward, not trend-led” approach. In fashion, you might invest in a trendy accessory rather than a head-to-toe look, and the same applies here.
Committing a bold, trendy colour to all four walls can be a big commitment. Instead, use these colours as accent moments. Paint your ceiling in a soft, unexpected hue for a cocooning effect. Use a rich, dramatic colour in a powder room or on a single statement wall, it’s like a bold handbag or a pair of statement shoes; it adds incredible personality without overwhelming the entire ‘ensemble’. This way, you can refresh easily when you’re ready for a change.
Sara: Texture is huge in fashion right now, think boucle, shearling, and crisp cotton. How can we introduce texture through paint?
Khan: This is where paint gets really exciting. We’re moving beyond flat walls. Texture can be introduced through both finish and material.
A matt or flat finish has a velvety, sophisticated feel that absorbs light, creating a sense of depth and serenity. It’s your cashmere knit of the paint world. Then you have low-sheen or eggshell, which is like a durable twill, it has a gentle lustre that’s practical for walls, forgiving of imperfections, and easy to clean.
Beyond the finish, we’re using specialist coatings like lime wash for a beautifully irregular, breathable finish with incredible movement, or concrete-effect paints for an urban, loft-like feel. These are the statement textures that give a room its unique character.
Sara, Fashion Admin: Let’s talk about flow. In an open-plan home, how do we create distinct “zones” with colour without it feeling disjointed?
Khan: Creating a cohesive flow is like styling a look that moves from day to night. You want the elements to connect. My golden rule is to work with a cohesive palette.
Choose three to five colours that live in the same family, warms with warms, cools with cools, and use them throughout the space. The main living area might be in the lightest shade, the dining nook in a mid-tone, and the kitchen cabinetry in the darkest. You can also use a single colour on all walls but use a feature colour on built-in joinery, like a bookshelf or a console. This creates visual interest and definition while maintaining a seamless, curated feel.
Sara: Preparation is key in any makeover. What does that look like for an interior paint job, and why is it non-negotiable?
Khan: Preparation is the tailoring of the painting world. You can have the most beautiful fabric, but if the fit is poor, the whole outfit fails. Similarly, the most expensive paint will look terrible on a poorly prepared wall.
Our process is meticulous. It involves:
- Filling and sanding: To create a perfectly smooth “canvas,” just like preparing a surface for a perfect makeup application.
- Sugar-soaping: Cleaning every surface to remove grease and dust, ensuring the paint adheres properly.
- Masking and protecting: We treat your home and belongings with the utmost care, using drop sheets and precision tape, so the only thing that changes is the colour of your walls.
Skipping prep is like applying a new coat of polish over an old, chipped one. It will never last, and it will never look its best.
Sara, Fashion Admin: Finally, for our readers who see their home as their ultimate style sanctuary, what is your one piece of transformational paint advice?
Khan: Don’t be afraid to look up and look down.
We are so conditioned to focusing on the walls, but the fifth wall, the ceiling, is a massive, untapped opportunity. Painting it a soft sky blue, a warm terracotta, or even a deep navy can completely transform the atmosphere of a room. Similarly, painting floorboards or interior woodwork in a contemporary colour can anchor the entire space.
Your home should be a reflection of you. Be bold where it feels right, and serene where you need it. And just like you’d trust a tailor with a beautiful garment, trust a professional to bring your vision to life with a flawless finish. That’s what turns a room from being merely painted to being truly styled.
